new des ark

one of my hands down, all time fav's des ark just released her second volume of acoustic live songs, and it might be safe to say this one is even better than vol. 1. too bad you can only nap the cdr if you live in her city, bummer, but it may be up for web sale sooner or later. let's hope. for fans of painfully beautiful quiet shit and everything else good altogether.

mp3: Des Ark - Saddle Is Waitin (C'mon Jump On It)

and here's an mp3 from her vol. 1, which you can buy over here

mp3: Des Ark - The Subtleties Of Chores & Unlocked Doors

both get the highest recommendation i can muster.

More DJ love for Matt & Kim

What's with hipster DJ's loving Matt & Kim? Anyway, this time Chicago's Mano tries his hand at a track from their 06 debut full length, and it's pretty darn good until whoever Hollywood Hult is starts rapping over it. Who cares though, mix out of it before the unfortunate verse.

As a bonus here's the original Beeper joint with Kid Sister, because people seem to like that A-Trak remix posted below.

More A-Trak Remixes

I Just scooped up the new Boys Noize remix from Fool's Gold ceo and Kid Sister boyfriend A-Trak, and this guy is always precisely on point, I love that some of his shit is just straight up electro, so refreshing in the hipster saturated social circles will live (blog) in. I'm also posting his Beeper remix, because it makes me wanna fuck on the dance floor and smoke cigarettes.

I've also got two pairs of +1's to give away and they go to the first two people who leave their name and email address in the comments, you must be at least 18+ and live in (or be visiting)
Madison to win. See ya there and keep your eyes peeled for more removeyourteeth give aways.

more cool kids

cool kids have put their newest song "action figures" up for free download over at the myspace, but to be honest this shit is nowhere near as good as any of their 2007 tracks, hopefully the rest of the upcoming (which has been "upcoming" for what, like a year?) bake sale ep will be little more my style.

here's an oldie I can't get enough of lately as well

XXX

One of my favorite DJ's and producers, XXXChange, has an EP coming out on Money Studios with fellow Spank Rock DJ's Delvin and Darko, along with a all-star fist-full of others (namely Amanda Blank and Pase Rock.) It's called the Fully Fitted EP (but isn't on fully fitted, because apparently that's just a "semi" label now) and is full of the, you know, real shit.

From what I've heard so far this thing totally kills it, you can read all about it and nap the Justice/Bird Man re-edit over at the Mad Decent blog, highly recommended. And I've also got his remix of Santogold's L.E.S. Artistes, which has been knocking me out all morning, so check that out and enjoy!

Thursday the 21st Girl Talk is coming the the memorial union (in the great hall), the show is already sold out, but the Onion AV Club is giving away tickets, so you could score some there. Don't wear expensive gear, it will be ruined.

Here is our little buddy Greg the last time he rocked Madison.

Saturday the 23rd I'll be having a special in studio performance on my radio show, Milwaukee's DJ Diamonds and Madison's OCD Automatic will both be on to spin some tunes, talk and promote the monthly Indie Queer jam that our homie OCD hosts, should be rad times!

Wednesday the 27th I'll be giving away a pair of tickets to that very IQ Discotech party at the Majestic. More details will follow, but check back that day to hook yourself up for this jawn!

Then it all comes together on Friday the 29th, when the all-mighty hipster garage kings Black Lips will be playing at the memorial union for free, then the IQ jam blows up the majestic for a truly awesome night. Party hugs all around. Make sure to hit up both events.

black lips will also be doing a in-store at Mad City Music that very same day at 6 o'clock, be there!

fuck global warming

Times New Viking is the kind of band I wish I would have been into in high school, they probably would have, like, changed my life and shit. I can picture myself in study hall with a Nirvana t-shirt on and some flannel around my waist doodling a Weezer logo on my notebook while listening to this shit instead of writing a five page paper on the native americans or global warming or peace or whatever. But really, man. Fuck global warming, I don't even like whales, it's the MUSIC that really matters. I would have put this on a mixtape for a girl i had a crush on and then vigorously masturbated to a picture of Britney Spears I hid under my mattress (she used to be hot! i know, lol!) Anyway, this is what the Ohio boys and girl in Times New Viking do, their music sounds like acne and D+ report cards. Embarrassing boners and the fuzzed out, noisy and nostalgic punk-tinted rock tunes that all our inner teens have been waiting years for. I say you put this on and rub one out for your high school prom queen one, last, time.

MJ Winner

I have a winner for the MJ thriller ticket give away, but he says he joke is too "twisted" for his real name to be published, so I'll refer to him as Mr. Coke Sams. His joke is as follows:

"When I tell people that I had sex with Michael Jackson, they're always
like: "Oh my god, you were molested?" But no. Actually it was 100%
consensual and I wasn't a minor or anything. I can't say whether he's a
pedophile, but he's definitely gay. I won't go into the details of how we
first met, but it was thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

There's all the rumors about Michael being a pre-op transsexual and that's
totally not true. The only weird thing was that his pubes were waxed into
a landing strip, which didn't bother me because I'm bisexual.

I remember that his face did look a little funny, though. I think he'd
just had surgery and it was all sunken in around the nose. But my memory
is really hazy, because when I wasn't wearing the blindfold, my face was
shoved into the pillow.

People always think that sleeping with Michael would be creepy or
something. But it was actually totally sweet and normal. At every turn, he
was like: "Can I tickle your perineum?" or "Can I cum on your face?" Super
respectful.

The media's totally made Michael out to be this monster and I think that's
so wrong. I don't know if he did what people say he did. But I know what
he did to me. And I know that he did it out of love."

Well, this was clearly the winner, as most of the other jokes were retreads from 8th grade. creativity people!

Mr. Sams and a guest will have free tickets to the THRILLER PARTY this Friday at Café Montmartre, come and try to spot the "twisted" young fellow.

THRILLER party ticket giveaway

This Friday is the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's THRILLER, and the fine folks listed above are bringing the party to Madison's own Café Montmartre. I've also got a pair of tickets to give away for this sure to be wild and unforgettable dance party night!

Here's the deal, email me your favorite Michael Jackson joke (bonus points for including Robin Williams in some way, just kidding... or am i?) along with your full name, to: totallymantooth(at)gmail(dot)com

I'll pick a winner Thursday morning and you and a friend will be good as gold for the party. You must be 21+ and live in (or be visiting) Madison, WI to enter. Good Luck!

Smile!

The new album Smile, from Japanese post-everything gods Boris, found it's way into my hands this afternoon and after only half a listen, I am officially floored. And while they may have abandond their drone metal past, Boris keeps pushing forward with every new release (this one being their first non-collaboration in over two years) and the results of the latest is a psychedelic experience in sound, emotion and electricity, er, not really. But this album is doing weird things to my body and mind. I would suggest just giving these mp3's a listen.

mp3:放て!
mp3:花・太陽・雨

Southern Lord will release Smile in the US on April 29, along with translated track titles.

City On A Hill

Relapse records cyber-prog grind trio Genghis Tron have a new record coming out on Feb. 19th, and while I'm not feeling it as much as their previous releases it may just need some time. Take a listen and see how you feel.

Young Widows sign record deal to TRL

Kentucky boys (and ex breather resist heavy hitters) Young Widows officially signed a record contract with NY label Temporary Residence Limited as of yesterday. TRL is home to removeyourteeth favorites Grails and Mono and although the bands bass and gloom heavy post-hardcore isn't the usual instrumental soundscapes TRL is putting out, I'm always impressed with the care and detail they put into their releases (especially the vinyl.) So good luck and congrats to the boys, excited to hear new material.

We Only Fuck To Vol. 4

Not only am I late on this, but this (along with posting about shit like vampire weekend) is turning my blog into every other shit system hype-machined thing you read, but I can't help becoming a big fan of Canadian five piece Black Mountain's folk-tinted Sabbath worship. And I feel like i have to mention this here new full length In The Future, out on (the sub-par) Jagjaguwar and in stores now. Think Ozzy in an American Apparel hoodie and you're half way there.

mp3: Black Mountain - Angels

Black Mountain are playing at Madison's High Noon on 3/23, it should be a good show, bring weed. And maybe I'll get back on track with some more "seriously underground" posts later, or maybe not.

Radio show and tickets for free.

My show on WSUM Student Radio airs today (and every Saturday) from 1-2pm CST. I haven't mentioned it here yet so I thought i'd put it out there.

The show is up for stream over at wsum.org. Here's an mp3 from my set. Hope you're digging it if you listen and turn in next week for more of the same.

mp3: Blood On The Wall - Hibernation from the album Liferz

In other news, this Wed. I'll be giving away some tickets to the Thriller's 25th Anniversary Party taking place at Madison, WI's Cafe Montmartre Friday Feb. 8th, so check back then if you wanna score some free tix.

vampire weekend

New York four piece Vampire Weekend look and sound like they're stuck in a Wes Anderson movie, don't tell me when listening to these mp3's you can't picture our little buddy over there in a Max Fisher beret with some buddy holly glasses on, ready to take a shit in Bill Murray's yard or whatever. And besides the occasional boarder line ska miss-step, Vampire Weekend's tropical and cinematic pop rock sounds are pretty okay. Making a fun, solid and not too serious debut album, but heaven help me if hear another asshole throwing around "afro-beat" while talking about this (or any other) contemporary indie rock band.

mp3: I Stand Corrected
mp3: Campus

the self titled album comes out today on XL recordings, the banner on myspace is telling me to buy it at target for 8.99

Today is a great day for the internet.

Dear Internet

I know we haven't been so close lately, but today i received your gift of an advance copy of Oakland, Ca. based Why?'s new full length Alopecia (which doesn't come out until March 22nd!) and what can I say, it's a really thoughtful gift. How did you know that's what I really wanted this Martin Luther King Jr. day? I guess You just know what a guy wants. Other than The Hollows which you must have heard me raving about when it was released as a single in 07, my favorite track is Simeon's Dilemma (even if Yoni does mention his "fixie" on it) which is almost the perfect mix of painfully sweet and a little bit dark (but not too dark.) This is a gift I truly love, man, and I hope I can return the favor somehow, someday.

Hope that bandwidth situation is working it's self out
love, Malcolm.

mp3: Why? - Simeon's Dilemma

Why? will be playing Madison in April and Alopecia comes out March 22nd, buy that shit!

French Superstars Go Underground

As you probably already heard, french superstar DJ duo Justice recently had a mixtape rejected by London powerhouse Fabric, who apparently "weren't ready" for something like this. Justice's label Ed Banger picked up the ball and released the thing as a special "x-mas mix" -- although it's a little late for that -- to critical (blogical) acclaim. The mix includes forty some minutes of obscure french disco, powerhouse slow jams and smooth electronic. But the undisputed standout is Belgian pop due Das Pop's Underground, which could easily move a dance floor as well just provide easy listening vibes any day of the week. The single is as of now unreleased, but will apparently be on their still TBA new full length early this year. You can pick up their current material on itunes or at any (Belgian Friendly) independent record store.

Silver Stallion

I've been listening to the new cat power covers album jukebox a lot over my recent holiday break and I can't say it's sticking with me too much (let's hope the bonus disc with hot boys and nick cave covers is a little better) but it does have a few really solid tracks.

Silver stallion, which was written by lee clayton and made famous by the highwaymen, stands out on this (sometimes) backing band bloated album.
